Jefferson Market Library: Entertaining Lions, Witches, Wardrobes
Walden Media Brings Libraries into C.S. Lewis Chronicles

Is the beloved medievalist C.S. Lewis turning over in his grave? Better get out the bell, book, and candle - - if you're afraid of witches or wild profiteering - - because Walden Media and Walt Disney are about to show children that, where there's a book, there's a $ licensing deal.

* * Excerpt from a News Item:
For Walden Media, recapturing imagination and rekindling curiosity doesn’t begin and end in the movie theatre. Walden Media will sponsor an exhibit tour to promote Walt Disney Picture’s and Walden Media’s upcoming film The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, an adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ beloved 1950 novel, due to open in theaters on December 9, 2005.

The free exhibit - - which features props, costumes, and behind the scenes footage from Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media’s December 9th release, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe - - will visit select libraries. Walden Media is working with these libraries and locale ducational organizations to create programming related to the exhibit and the book and film on which it is based.

A list of scheduled library stops is below:
N.Y. Public Library, Jefferson Market Branch: November 10-14, 2005
The exhibit will be open to the public during library hours. . . .
Each city will host a media event, including a press conference, celebrity readings, and an opportunity for children to tour the exhibit and participate in educational activities.

In conjunction with the exhibit, Walden Media will make educational donations to 200 libraries nationwide. Participating libraries will receive a Narnia Theatrical Display, copies of the novel, bookmarks, and Educator’s Guides.

Jefferson Market Hi-Jacking: The N.Y. Sun

The New York Sun printed this:
TEMPERS FLARED AT MEETING OVER LIBRARY CLOSING in W. VILLAGE

West Village residents' tempers flared at a meeting on Oct. 18th over plans to close the Jefferson Market Library for at least 18 months to make various renovations, including moving the research room from the basement to make room for a young adult area. "It was such an angry crowd," a former City Council member Carol Greitzer said. . . . Residents expressed concerns over not having been consulted about the proposed changes. A West Village resident, Fredda Seidenbaum, said research should be done on how many teenagers live in the neighborhood and use the library. . .

Jail & Courthouse: by Richard E. Howard

Alas, City Hall has abandoned this noble Sixth Avenue landmark, and left it handcuffed to a rotting wooden scaffolding. Here's a view of this architecturally distinguished judicial complex -- without the scaffold.
Artist Richard E. Howard's fascinating work [16.5"x22"] was done in tempera.

Prisoners of Sixth Avenue [in The Villager]

This article was published in The Villager:

From activists and authors to madams and madwomen: The prisoners of Sixth Avenue

By LindaAnn Loschiavo

Hollywood is embracing an armful of women’s history attached to the crooked elbow of W. 10th St. west of Sixth Ave. In April, “House of D” by David Duchovny commemorated the Women’s House of Detention, which overlooked Village Square (now Ruth Wittenberg Triangle) until the prison was razed in 1973. A movie musical “Hello, Sucker” due out this year revisits the same location during the 1920s with Madonna as diamond-draped “Texas” Guinan, a Village resident and rodeo queen whose speakeasies landed her behind bars at Jefferson Market Jail. Sandwiched between those two premieres, the 30th anniversary of a garden established on that very site was celebrated this April. . . .

1-to-2-year rehab, smaller teen lounge for library
By Caitlin Eichelberger

When rumors of a proposed renovation of Jefferson Market Library at West 10th Street and Sixth Avenue surfaced, so too did area activists protective of the historic Greenwich Village landmark.
* * COMMUNITY OUTCRY OVER the SECRECY & WEB of DECEPTION
The community outcry has resulted in alterations to the reconfiguration plans and has gotten the full attention of library representatives. Attempting to bridge the gap in communication between administration and residents, branch librarian Frank Collerius and Susan Kent, director and chief executive of the New York Public Library’s branch libraries, attended the Community Board 2 Institutions Committee meeting last month. On Oct. 18, the pair will host tours of the library alongside the architects to give a sense of “how [the renovations] will feel, that kind of thing” Collerius said.
* * FACADE NEGLECT vs INTERIOR SPRUCE-UP
The hubbub began in early summer following a Villager article outlining the renovations, specifically a young adult space then termed a “teen lounge.” Comfortable furniture, study rooms, music and a television playing music videos were expected to round out the lounge, which was slated for the basement, bumping the reference section to the second floor with the general adult materials in a space already perceived by library users as crowded. Negative response from Villagers, however, has resulted in a reduction of the teen lounge space — originally slated for the entire basement — by 50%. The teen lounge will be . . .
